2006 ANNUAL REPORT

The Byram Township Police Department consists of fifteen sworn officers and two records clerks. The department has always been committed to delivering professional police services to its residents. The Byram Township Police Department had several significant changes during 2006.

  • The Department promoted Sergeant Peter Zabita to the rank of Lieutenant on April 17, 2006. He will assume command of the patrol division when he returns from his Army National Guard assignment in Afghanistan.
  • Patrolman Philip DeSmet retired on December 31, 2006 after a distinguished career with the Department.
  • The department received a $4,000 grant and participated in the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety’s “Click It or Ticket Mobilization” program along with many other police departments throughout the State and Nation. Byram Police Officers issued 187 safety belt summonses during a two week period in May and June, 2006 increasing safety belt usage on Township roads.
  • The Department was awarded $7,183.55 from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety as part of the Drunk Driving Enforcement Fund. In 2006 the Department arrested 44 individuals for driving while intoxicated. A grant of $7,183.55 has been awarded for 2006’s program. The Byram Township Police Department will continue to strictly and aggressively enforce the D.W.I. laws to keep our roadways safe and sober.
  • The Byram, Newton and Andover Township Police Departments received a grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety to simultaneously participate in an “Aggressive Driving Enforcement” campaign along Route 206 in March and July, 2006. The department was awarded $7,500 and issued 336 summonses for aggressive driving violations in a four week period.
  • The Department was awarded $1,384.95 for the replacement of Body Armor by New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice.
  • The Department continues to work with the County Office of Emergency Management in the area of homeland security and disaster relief.
  • The Department completed its sixteenth year instructing D.A.R.E. to the fifth grade classes at the Intermediate School. The D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony and picnic were held in May, 2006. Three Byram Officers are trained as D.A.R.E. instructors.

In 2006, Byram Township Police Officers averaged ten days of in-service training and traveled a total of over 154,000 miles during their patrols. The department will continue to serve the citizens of the Township to the best of its ability.
